Herpetology
is a branch of zoology that deals with the study of amphibians and reptiles. Amphibians are very sensitive to environmental changes, therefore herpetology is especially important in the study of global ecology. Biologists use the term “herp” to refer to all amphibians and reptiles, but excludes fish. As a career, herpetology is a very competitive field and therefore many people concentrate on a specific area, such as ecology, evolution, taxonomy, physiology or molecular biology as it pertains to retiles and amphibians. The keeping and breeding of reptiles and amphibians is also a fascinating hobby. Some of the “herp habitats” includes terrariums, aquariums and paludariums.
